On 23rd February, 1916, 6th Royal West Surrey (Queens) of 37 Brigade, 12th Division, moved into the front line trenches near Vermelles on the Loos battlefield. The relief of was completed by 7pm but that night the enemy were very active, as was nearly always the case when a new battalion moved into the line, and targeted the trenches with rifle grenades and trench mortars. 10 men were wounded and 4 were killed, including John Holloway. |
